The American Medical Association (AMA) announced the launch of a new resource on the AMA Ed Hub™ to help physicians and other practitioners complete the new, one-time eight-hour training requirement issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. The page will serve as a one-stop shop to make the process as easy as possible for DEA-registered physicians and practitioners to earn the required Continuing Medical Education (CME). The AMA has created this resource that has a total of 58 hours of CME on topics related to opioids. Many of the modules are designated FREE. Physicians can pick and choose from these resources to get up to 8 hours of CME to meet the DEA requirement. The free courses offered on the AMA Ed Hub page can be taken in any combination to fulfill the eight-hour requirement.
 
By completing this CME early, starting on June 27, 2023, physicians will be able to simply check a box on their DEA registration application or renewal form indicating that they have satisfied this training requirement. The deadline for satisfying this new training requirement is the date of a practitioner’s next scheduled DEA registration submission—regardless of whether it is an initial registration or a renewal registration—on or after June 27, 2023. These courses can be taken by physicians or other practitioners.

We at the Department of Medical Education at Nicklaus Children's Hospital will work on adding content to our curriculum in the future that is not only able to satisfy the new DEA requirements but is also targeted to those in Pediatric specialties. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has launched an online course that meets the 8-hour requirement and offers MOC in addition to CME. The course will be available until October 31, 2023, and it is $200 for Non-Members and $160 for AAP FAAP Members.
